The FYES was firstly introduced in 2011 to collect feedback from first year students about various aspects of their experiences in the year. In its development, consultation was made with relevant stakeholders which included representatives of Schools/AIS and support units. Efforts were also made to review relevant research literature, in particular overseas studies on student engagement (e.g. National Survey of Student Engagement [NSSE]).
Throughout the years, the questionnaire has been periodically reviewed and revised. As one in the series of Annual UG Student SurveysNote, the FYES now covers the following aspects:
- Overall evaluation
- Academic experience
- Other learning experience
- Relationships with teaching staff and peers
- Campus life (out-of-class activities, adaptation to university life)
At the end of data collection, aggregate results are consolidated and made available to Schools/AIS, departments and support units.
Note: It includes Intake Survey, First Year Experience Survey (FYES) and Student Engagement and Satisfaction Questionnaire Survey (for final year students, SESQ).
